One Saturday I woke up early and worked out in the fitness facility in my hotel in Savannah, GA. By the time I had finished my workout around 8:30 am, I was a boutique owner. That’s how fast life can change. Jay called me to inform me that we had secured a space for our first Jun E Caniel store in Fayetteville, NC. My eyes immediately filled with tears but I kept my composure until I was off the phone and in the bathroom preparing for my shower. Once I was alone, I cried and I thanked the Creator for such a blessing.
As we patiently wait for the current tenant to officially move out of the space, we are making plans for this newest venture. We are doing research and brainstorming ideas for our Jun E space 24/7. Minds are constantly filled with ideas and more things to add to our never-ending “To Do” lists. Jay calls me on the phone and randomly throws out ideas while I quietly make notes of my own. I imagine that waiting for the birth of our first child will be similar. We are anxious and excited.
There’s a new level of urgency in our Jun E air and we are carefully planning for the physical manifestation of a vision that is only one year old. Less than one year ago we sold our very first Jun E Caniel bags and shirts, our very first purchase. That was on October 30, 2010. My, has Jun E Caniel grown since then! It’s crazy!!!
What if we had never taken a chance on ourselves or our dreams? What if we had never decided to commit to Jun E Caniel? I cannot imagine our lives without it. Thus far, this company has allowed us to touch so many people, as well as become more in tune with ourselves. Jun E Caniel continues to blossom and transform in ways we could only see in our heads. It is only right that we continue to stretch our imaginations and let the Creator work to help our visions for this company take us further and further.
It is such a blessing to see this baby grow. I cannot wait to see how everything unfolds. Thanks to all you Jun E people out there for your support! Jun E Nation forEver!

“I don’t know what your destiny will be, but one thing I know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve.”
I find this to be true. My greatest moments of joy these days come from those during which I am serving others. I was asked a series of questions today by a college student about my volunteerism and service to the community. He had to interview someone who serves the community. These questions were interesting to me because I had not given much thought to how rewarding serving others is for me. Nor had I really taken time to acknowledge my own “philosophy about volunteerism”. Serving my local and global communities have been a part of my life for several years. It is something I do for fun and something I do when it is needed.
Our company is centered around making a positive impact in our world by helping others in a variety of ways, including community service. What most people do not realize is that community service has been a way of life for Jay and I for much longer than Jun E Caniel, Inc. has existed. It was something we did as individuals before we even met 13 years ago. I grew up seeing my mother serve and seeing other relatives serve. I was given the choice as a child to do the same, and I chose to do it because it seemed like the right thing to do and it gave me a way to occupy those summer months in Washington D.C.. I served when I was younger, sometimes reluctantly, but I always felt good at the end of the day for giving my time. Back then I did not fully understand the impact I was having, nor did I understand the foundation which was being laid. All of the volunteering I had done as a child and teenager was preparing me for a lifetime of service and giving. It prepared me for a bull like Jay, who requires nothing less than giving freely of myself to others in need. 🙂 It equipped me with the tools needed to recruit and lead others in this Jun E Movement as we continue to spread our message of love.
What better way to show love than to give of your time? Time is after all, our most valuable asset. What a gift to give someone! What’s more, it feels so Jun E to give and serve. Have you been so kind as to share your time with another lately? Have you been able to get down off your pedestal to be a catalyst for positive change in your community by helping solve problems instead of complaining? Get out there! Add value to your life! Be Jun E and give a little or a lot. It does not matter how much you give as long as you give. Giving a little is fine because there is always someone like myself who can help out and be a fill-in, but we cannot do it by ourselves.
“In doing your best serving others for free, a lot of eyebrows will raise and sneers will curve many a-faces. But in the end those incredulous to what you put up with to help, no longer matter. It’s not between you and those snobs, but with whom you have given your hand to lift, and of course to God who Is watching and noting it in your book.” Mother Theresa (paraphrased)
Giving is a very Jun E thing!

As owner of my own business, I love what I do. I love being my own boss and being the master of my time. The thing I love most is exploring and developing my creativity. I get to take an idea and develop it and make it manifest as a t-shirt design. Some ideas take longer to develop than others. The longest I have ever spent on a design was several weeks. I was not working on the design 24/7 but it took a long time to make it into something I thought was presentable. Her name is Jun E Muse and we often refer to her as “The Singing Lady”.
I drew her over a year before we decided to truly commit to Jun E Caniel. When I did the shading, I decided to keep her in graphite and colored the vibes she was putting out. Those vibes represent her positive influence on the world. They represent the inspiration she gives others, thus her official title of “Jun E Muse”. She is singing, reciting, declaring whatever it is you need to hear to be inspired and motivated. We always thought she would make a nice t-shirt design. Now, the question was how would I get this into Adobe Illustrator? That was a painstakingly tedious task. I used tracing paper to trace and transfer the image onto a sheet of marker paper. During that process I decided to change the Muse’s hair to form more of an Afro. I figured this would add more symmetry to the piece… I then took photo after photo of this picture and played with lighting in the office until I had a photo that would look fine in Adobe Illustrator.
From there, I began to edit it and play around with colors. I played with all kinds of color combinations until I came up with the one that I felt should be the first edition of Jun E Muse. The great thing is that I am still playing around with and tweaking this particular piece. You can definitely expect to see variations of the Muse in the very near future.
That’s the beauty of Jun E Muse. She changes and adapts with the times. She can be whatever you need her to be to inspire you. Jun E Muse is your inspiration to be just as Jun E as you can be!
Stay Jun E, my people. Be inspired
