Jun E Gratitude

In Daily Inspiration, Motivational Speaking, Thoughts on November 27, 2012 at 6:29 pm

Woke up this morning thankful for life. We are thankful that there is another day to aimlessly chase our dreams all around our heads till it reaches every continent that exists. We are thankful for all the conversations that we have had thus far in life, and for all the mistakes and life lessons learned. We are forever thankful for all the positive comments made inside our store, on the Jun E Blog page, Twitter, Facebook, and in the atmosphere.

We smile and still say “thank you” even to those who told us we would never be successful. Our will is stronger than theirs and we prove it by continual, rebellious existence.

It’s a great day to give a Jun E thanks to the Creator. Thank you for hope, dreams, triumph, vision, clean water, and everyone down for improving humanity with their lives. The road may be rocky at times, but success starts with gratitude. You never get beyond scarcity. We must start beyond it! We must start with an abundance of thanks and gratitude in our minds, then it will manifest in every facet of life. Gratitude is the starting point of true happiness, wealth, health and a Jun E life. See you at the top!

Hijacked in San Francisco

In Business, Culture, Daily Inspiration, ECO-Friendly, Thoughts on November 11, 2012 at 5:23 pm

It seems like every city the Jun E Caniel team visits, we get hijacked. Coming to San Francisco to spread the brand proves to be no different.  After a long, successful day at the Green Festival we started to walk back to our hotel. This walk in itself was interesting with darkness settling in the city and the emergence of very off-beat characters.  In front of us was an older woman who we assumed was also walking back from the Green Festival.  At some point while walking, we passed her, but she was never far behind us.

We could hear her loud sneezes as we walk, and we would look back and say “Bless you”.  There was a string of off-beat characters moon walking, skipping, and talking to themselves on every block and we both would look back and check on the woman. Finally, at a crosswalk as we observed a young man skipping and dancing in the street as he almost got hit by a car.  None of this seemed to phase the man and he continued on his way as the three of us began to talk to one another about what had just happened.  We asked the woman what there was to do in the area and before we knew it, we were following her up Market Street.

Jay Caniel, Tiya Caniel, and Rose This offer of a walking tour of San Francisco at night was one we couldn’t resist. As we walked toward, Rose commentated every moment of the way.  “Here is our city hall it is so beautiful, and you must come back during the day to see it.  But look how beautiful it is all lit up now!”  Next was the old mint where they used to make money before the earthquake and fire of 1906.  Her excitement was intoxicating and contagious.  Walking by an ad on a building, Rose pointed and laughed at a picture of a woman’s feet and said “How’d you like to tickle those toes?”  Laughingly she apologized for her silliness.  She is a retired kindergarten teacher and can’t help it.

We ventured a ways to Westfield Mall, which is unbelievably huge and has the most beautiful dome ceiling.  Rose shared with us the history of the building and some of the stores there.  After leaving the mall, Rose excitedly brought us to a record shop called Rasputin Music, where grungy looking young men checked your bags at the front and operated the elevator inside.  Side note:  Whenever you enter the elevator, the guy operating it will be playing only his favorite tunes, which most will likely never have heard before.  Beside this amazing record shop is Blondie’s where you can get pizza by the slice.   We entered  hotels where presidents have stayed and we relished in perusing the pictures and memorabilia from long ago.  Our last stops included John’s Grill & Steakhouse (to see the maltese falcon from the 1941 movie “The Maltese Falcon”) and the park at Union Square.

What an amazing time!  At the end, we were very tired but it was well worth our time to have met and conversed with such a beautiful person as Rose.   We  are nothing but mirrors, reflecting what we have inside on others. Rose took the time out to make sure that we were educated on her city. You could feel the love, prosperity, and happiness that she possessed in her life.  We will always remember Rose and her Jun E love for her city.  She had us whirling through the streets of downtown San Francisco till we were breathless but still wanting more.  Thank you, Rose for sharing what you love most about this amazing place!  What a blessing you are!

A Question of Purpose

In Business, Culture, Daily Inspiration, Journal, Love, Motivational Speaking, Thoughts on June 5, 2012 at 5:36 pm

We come into the world bamboozled by the pressures of family, the media, and rhetoric from politicians. There is a certain standard set for each of our lives. The question is who sets these lofty standards? So most go on like a robot chasing things that in the end turn out to be unimportant. Things such as job titles, money, cars, houses, social statuses, etc. The list actually can go on for days. But how many of us really know our purpose? How many of us really know what we are designed to do? Is your legacy 20 years at a “job” and a ” retirement check”? Is your legacy yours? Is it something you were ever really interested in? Or is it something your friends, family or media told you was cool? Did you do it because you never wanted to struggle in life? Did you do it because you could possibly have control over people? Were you the kid who got picked on and you wanted to get back at others? OK, I will stop badgering you with questions most don’t want to answer. I guess we should be writing about the “House wives of _____” (you fill in the blank). Then maybe you would take more of an interest.

We are designed for a specific purpose. Deep down inside everyone of us lies a huge entity waiting to be UNLEASHED!  As I sat around this morning my mind was consumed with these thoughts. Sometimes we have to take a step back from the hustle and bustle of life and think. At Jun E Caniel we choose to focus on things that help us live.  An inspirational word, thought provoking questions, inspiring designs, empowering messages, and volunteering just to name a few. Don’t settle for a job, title, or career. Find your purpose in life and help others do the same. There is something out there bigger for all of us! We love you!

We are created for Greatness! Jun E!

In Culture, Daily Inspiration, Motivational Speaking, Thoughts on May 27, 2012 at 5:31 pm

You ever wonder why we were created? I’m sure many of you do. We were created to be Jun E! That means “great” for the people who don’t know. Every life has a purpose, reason, and legacy to fill. We are all legends under the sun. At Jun E Caniel we believe that everyone has a lion within them, just waiting to be unleashed.  Everyone has one direction in which all space is open to them. I like how Emerson puts it, saying we are like a ship in a river; we run against obstructions on every side but one; on that side all obstruction is taken away, and we sweep serenely over a deepening channel into an infinite sea.  You see every man has this call of the power to do something unique, and no one has any other call.  We encourage you to unfold yourself to the world. Make your mark in this life. Making your mark on the world is hard. If it were easy, everybody would do it. But it’s not. It takes patience, it takes commitment, and it comes with plenty of failure along the way. The real test is not whether you avoid this failure, because you won’t. It’s whether you let it harden or shame you into inaction, or whether you learn from it; whether you choose to persevere.

Style: Fashion at Jun E Caniel boutique fills ecofriendly niche

Jun E Caniel Owners Jay and Tiya Caniel didn’t expect to own a store so soon.Since June 2010, the couple has sold an eco-friendly line of dresses, T-shirts and hoodies, along with smaller accessories and body products. They sold the clothing at assorted retail stores and wherever they could. When they envisioned opening a freestanding store, they wrote 2015 on a vision board as their goal. But last fall, Jay noticed a space tucked behind Zorba’s restaurant on Raeford Road and knew it was the one. He called his wife, who was in Savannah, Ga., at the time, to tell her the news.

Since opening in February, the first-time business owners said the process of opening Jun E Caniel has been a learning experience. The Caniels put sweat equity into transforming the space, which was formerly occupied by the women’s boutique Epiphany. Handpainting the walls and redoing floors, they’ve made the boutique consistent with their own eco-friendly and sustainable sensibilities. The Caniels won’t bend on their sustainable mission for cost-cutting measures, either. They use premium organic and eco-friendly fabric for their shirts and hoodies. Even the wallets are fair trade products from India, with attached explanations on the people who made them and where they’re from.”There’s a certain consciousness that our customers have,” said Tiya, who is 30. “An awareness that goes beyond just liking how a design looks. They can appreciate the whole environment of the store, and they can appreciate our message.”

www.jcaniel.com The pair have been together for 14 years, since they were freshmen at Winston-Salem State University. They got married seven years ago. They movedwww.jcaniel.com to Fayetteville in 2008 when Jay was hired as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Fayetteville State University. After two years at the university, he moved on to focus on Jun E Caniel.”The word Jun E means greatness; that’s what we created it to mean,” says Jay, who is 31, of the store’s name and mantra. For some, the spontaneous decision to chase a dream earlier than expected would be jarring, but it has become routine for the Caniels. The couple was living in Green Cove Springs, Fla., when Jay, teaching and coaching at a local school, convinced Tiya, working as a juvenile probation officer at the time, to get married during their lunch break one day.

Tiya balances out Jay’s energy with more practical ideas, but the couple’s shared vision is on display in the space. The natural light and bright colors awaken what could feel like cramped space. “I come up with the whole puzzle, and she is very great at getting to the puzzle piece by piece,” Jay said.”We operate in our strengths,” Tiya said. They hope their brand helps people “find their ideal self.” They hope to build a sense of community from within the store that extends into the local artist community, whether it’s through displaying and selling local art or eventually selling locally created products.

The clothes themselves feel vibrant, even when they’re not in bright colors. Many of the designs created by Tiya have a tropical vibe that meshes well with Jay’s roots in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where he was born. The boutique was recently approved to sell Toms shoes, a brand whose philanthropic mission provides a pair of shoes for a needy child somewhere in the world for every pair sold. Toms is usually selective in the stores that carry it and evaluates each store to ensure the missions of both entities are in sync.

www.jcaniel.comThe couple hopes to add athletic wear for yoga and basketball in the future. As far as new designs, they expect to incorporate a lot more color and abstract designs.”We loved the cute designs, but we want people to dig inside,” Jay says. “It’s really about people discovering the gold that’s inside them. We want to build a community of greatness.”Want more?

The Struggles of a Natural Born Dreamer

In Business, Culture, Daily Inspiration, Jun E Caniel Conversation Series, Jun E Gives, Motivational Speaking, Thoughts on May 1, 2012 at 5:15 pm

www.jcaniel.com These dreams have been with me from since birth. For some reason I can’t get them out of my head. I’ve been on this earth now for 31 years. My parents truly have never supported me in anything I decided to do. The truth of the matter is my parents really don’t know me. I have tussled with this realization for years, and I must admit at times it hurts.  There are times when I think my mom is coming around but she goes back to her negative self. My wife and I have given lot of our time, money and brain power to empowering people in need. My parents reply ” Leave people alone”. ” Why are you helping the homeless?” Why are you mentoring other people’s kids?”  Those are the questions my mother asks on a daily basis. I remember when I quit being a principal to pursue my dreams of building Jun E Caniel, they frowned upon it. No support… What is a young man with all this vision of improving the world to do? Should I just pack it up and ignore my passion and the gifts I was given? Should I be like most and invest my life in someone else’s company, only to get shorted at the next down turn in the economy? Should I settle just for mediocrity or should I strain my potential till it cries for mercy?

It seems like everything was okay as long as my dreams remained “realistic”. My sister and her husband told me once that I would never play college basketball. They told me that I was a daydreamer. At that time I was only 11 years old.  They even told me there was a chance I would not graduate high school. Well I graduated, played college ball, and played in the Olympics. I currently hold four college degrees which include two undergrad and two master’s degree’s. I suspect this is the reason my sister and her husband do not talk to me. I learned a long time ago that you never argue to prove people wrong. You prove them wrong through actions.

Building Jun E Caniel has not been a easy road. Through the process we have lost houses, so-called family, friends, and cars. At one point I was riding a bike back and forth to work. My wife would have to catch rides to go to the grocery store. It was a struggle, but through it all we have never lost faith. We have grown into giants inside, striving for greatness. We have found ourselves and purpose in life through this Jun E journey. Our passion and faith keeps the dreams alive.  We recently opened our first store, bringing that dream to life.

Tiya and Jay Caniel With minimum help and no loans from the bank we opened the first Jun E Caniel store. It is true that the best way to predict the future is to build it. I wouldn’t trade any of the struggle for nothing. You can’t expect people to jump up and down for joy over your vision, after all most will never discover the true gold that resides inside of them. We live to start a revolution of people who know their worth in life! People who are not afraid to try! People who believe in themselves so much that they are willing to risk it all. That’s Jun E Caniel. As I write this I look forward to sharing our dreams, love, passions, and goals with the world. We live to improve humanity and build greatness with y0u. See you at the top!

A Jun E Revolt!

In Daily Inspiration, Motivational Speaking on April 4, 2012 at 3:57 pm

www.jcaniel.com It is so easy to feel bogged down by the daily happenings of a seemingly purposeless existence.  It’s so easy to succumb to a “woe is me” attitude and eventually conform to the miserable normalcy of being mediocre and satisfied with the status quo. What a chore it is, sometimes, to overcome the oppression of contentment and comfort to rebel against the norm! It is necessary to do so however.  You see, we never know who is watching us and looking at us for an example on how to act.  We never know how we influence others.  Instead of wallowing in self-pity, frustration, and overall negativity we should focus on the positive.  Squeeze everything you can out of every experience, and work  to make a positive impact in others’ lives.  I know it gets hard sometimes and it’s far easier to surrender, but the sweet triumph of rebelling against the norm can be so much sweeter!  If you are not happy, change your life.  Create something wonderful and delicious!  Make it worth while!  Or acknowledge that so far it has already been worth while.  Reach inside and start using your Jun E!
